One of the enduring characters of the "women's novel," as opposed to serious fiction by women, is the the protagonist's true soulmate. He arrives early in the story...and stays in the background until nearly the end. He's "calm, strong and so dependable"...not to mention attractive and successful. And he's chaste, a one-woman man who'd rather suffer unrequited love than find someone who cares about him. Guys like this pretty much don't exist in real life.
