Ferenc Erkel

This is exciting news. The Los Angeles Opera is going to present what is said to be the American premiere (although I have a feeling it isn't) of Ferenc Erkel's classic 1861 Hungarian opera Bank Ban, under the baton of music director Placido Domingo:

It is not clear if it going to be performed in Hungarian, although one would hope so; if not, then a performance in English translation would be preferable to one in another language. The opera has been recorded by conductors Vilmos Komor, Janos Ferencsik, and Tamas Pal.

Here is more on Erkel (1810-1893), who composed nine operas in all:

At least one other Erkel opera, Hunyadi Laszlo, has been recorded complete.

The LA Opera has just announced its program for the 2011-12 season, and Erkel's Bank Ban is not included. I am so disappointed! I live very far away from LA, in the Midwest, but planned to fly to LA to have the opportunity to see this Opera. I'm Hungarian, and LOVE Bank Ban! Alas, something must have nixed the plans. Any news about what happened? :(

The Los Angeles Times Culture Monster blog reported that "A special seventh production, the 19th century Hungarian opera Bánk bán, is in the process of being finalized and looks virtually certain for the season, according to company leaders.[Placido] Domingo, on the phone from New York, where he was rehearsing at the Metropolitan Opera, said he will conduct Bánk bán when it arrives in L.A., the exact dates of which will be announced later this year."

So don't give up hope!

Oh, that's great news! I'll keep waiting for that announcement then.
