Acquisitions, May 23-29

A big week for buying, since Shenadoah's half price sale was ending, and Half Price Books had a 20% off sale over Memorial Day weekend. I bought a lot of fiction, and a few other items.

  • William Dean Howells, Novels 1875-1886 (A Foregone Conclusion; A Modern Instance; Indian Summer; The Rise of Silas Lapham) (Library of America hc) (Half Price Books)
  • Budd Schulberg, What Makes Sammy Run? (Random House hc) -- I recently watched the excellent 1959 television adaptation of Schulberg's (in)famous Hollywood novel; I'll have more to say about it at some point. (Shenandoah, 1/2 price sale)
  • John Kennedy Toole, A Confederacy of Dunces (Evergreen pb) (HPB)
  • Jane Austen, Lady Susan, The Watsons and Sanditon (Peguin pb) (HPB)
  • Massimo Carlotto, The Fugitive (Europa Editions pb) -- Carlotto is an Italian author of noir fiction who was also a political fugitive for years. This is his memoir of life on the run (mainly in Mexico -- everyone goes to Mexico to disappear). (HPB)
  • George Gissing, The Whirlpool (Everyman pb) (HPB)
  • William Faulkner, Intruder in the Dust (Vintage pb) (Goodwill/Green Bay)
  • George Du Maurier, Trilby (Oxford pb) (Shenadoah, 1/2 price sale)
  • Camille Paglia, Vamps and Tramps (Vintage pb) -- Another re-purchase from the books I sold to Shenandoah in 2007. I could start to say something about Paglia here, but I think I'll wait. She deserves more than a line or two. (Shenandoah, 1/2 price sale)
  • Arnold Whitridge, Rochambeau (Collier pb) -- "America's Neglected Founding Father." I'll say. (Goodwill/Green Bay)
  • Aran Shetterly, The Americano: Fighting with Castro for Cuba's Freedom (Algonquin hc) -- This account of an American participant in the Cuban Revolution (later executed by Castro, surprise) fits in nicely with my Latin America project. (Goodwill/Green Bay)
  • John P. Kaminski, The Founders on the Founders (University of Virginia hc) -- A great idea, a commonplace book of comments on the American founders by the founders themselves. I had this out from the library but hadn't finished it -- it's a long book that's perfect for reading over a span of many months -- so I got my own copy. (Biblio)
  • Amanda Holden et al., The Viking Opera Guide (Viking hc) -- A 1993 reference book apparently much in demand on the second-hand market. The later paperback abridgement, The New Penguin Opera Guide, also contains new material, so I'll need to get a copy of that, too. (Goodwill/Green Bay)
  • Greg Dening, Mr. Bligh's Bad Language: Passion, Power and Theatre on The Bounty (Cambridge hc) (Abebooks)
  • Michael Benedikt/George Wellwarth, Modern French Theatre: The Avant-Garde, Dada, and Surrealism (Dutton hc) -- An anthology that includes Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi (mentioned in one of my posts on Gide's The Counterfeiters) and 16 other significant French plays. (Shenandoah, 1/2 price sale)
  • Andrzej Panufnik, Sinfonia Sacra/Sinfonia Rustica (conducted by the composer) (Unicorn LP) (Goodwill/Green Bay)
  • Bela Bartok, Piano Concertos Nos 2 and 3 (Geza Anda/Ferenc Fricsay) (DG LP) (Goodwill/Green Bay)
